I will agree that sci-fi skews male. The ladies just aren't into sci-fi as much as the fellas are. But I would hardly say it was "toxically" male. Just different tastes I guess. We're not into rom-coms as much. Men are more into Sci-fi for sure but there has been no shortage of female lead heroes in sci-fi films as a lot of facebook comments to this Guardian post listed off movies like Arrival, Interstellar, Gravity, Alien, Contact, Prometheus and even The Martian (Jessica Chastain being the captain).
But I can kinda see where the author is coming from because in all these movies the men are playing macho, against the odds astronauts, unflinched by their impending doom wheras the women are often seen being overly emotional and breaking down in tears. Like Sandra Bullocks character in Gravity where she is having a breakdown when super confident and calm George Clooney comes into re-assure her. Or Matt Damon in the Martian who keeps his emotions pretty much in control given his dire situation. Interstellar where Anne Hathaway goes on a teary eyed speech about Love when Matthew McConaughey keeps her in check by dismissing her with a cold response. Arrival where Amy Adams is succumbing to losing her future child.
I do think its all nonsense though, it's just natural to how women and men usually respond to stress.
