I have seen 5 Ulmer films, viz.,
The Black Cat (1934) - A mad genius, who is also a mass murderer of the first world war, lives in an Art Deco mansion with an expressionistic basement for his Satan worship. Wonderfully done with the kinds of thrills and scares that are completely different from what is offered up in so-called “horror” movies since the second half of the twentieth century.
Detour (1945) – Film Noir 101. Essential viewing for anyone wanting to explore this style/sub-genre.
The Strange Woman (1946) - At last director Edgar Ulmer gets an A-picture budget, stars, and a costume saga to bring his noir sentiments to. The story may be just a bit too sprawling and it turns a little soapy toward the end, but is engrossing all the same.
The Man From Planet X (1951) - Ulmer again manages a watchable genre movie on left-over sets from “Joan Of Arc” (1948) and a $1.50 budget. Lead woman actor Margaret Field is the mother of our own Sally Field.
The Amazing Transparent Man (1960) – Ulmer again does miracles with a low budget and a Z-movie script. His craftsmanship is evident in almost every frame. I quite enjoyed this short thriller originally aimed at the Saturday kid’s matinee crowd.
