Even gameplay is more polished in arcade version vs home versions of the day for Mortal Kombat 3 etc.
but I would agree with you, at least on some level, that graphics alone can't make or break a game. but I do believe they can help ones overall experience of a game, at least looking at things from more of a movie level enjoyment perspective. but I do acknowledge that some games are quick pick-up-and-play types of games and then there are more of that type, which tend to have better graphics, that are more of a experience kind of thing.
Graphics were never a huge selling point for me. Even to this day.
