Idiot producers, that's who. Richard Donner was also fired although about 75% of Superman II was already shot. Except Superman II still ended up being awesome. Not so much for Solo.... Yeah, Superman II is pretty good, but I personally find it inferior to The Donner Cut, which shaves off some extraneous sequences Richard Lester filmed so he could be credited as the director and better compliments the first film.
