I see your general point about how when growing up we tend to move to the next system thinking it's better and better but now all of these years have passed we look back on things and some systems don't really hold up that well were as some systems we might have considered worse in the past are now overall better. (NOTE: I think some of it is because in the old days some consoles I mostly liked because of Mortal Kombat 2/3 etc but now since we have access to arcade perfect versions (like through MAME emulator on PC or more proper arcade versions on the more semi-recent consoles), the consoles that used to be solid (say Genesis/SNES etc) mostly are forgettable for me now. like firing up the games on say Genesis/SNES would be playing a weaker version of the games but if I fired em up now it would be mostly a nostalgia thing.)
like off the top of my head, especially in pre-3D era consoles (i.e. prior to PS1(1995)/N64(1996)) I would probably back the original NES at this point in time. or to look at the 3D-era consoles to date (i.e. PS1(1995)/N64(1996) on forward) I would probably go with N64 over most others on some level (especially considering anything from PS3/XBox360 or newer still feels fairly new and not old school enough yet). plus, one could basically say N64 was Nintendo's last major console (like one that competed as the Top 2 major players as after that things shifted to Microsoft vs Sony pretty much and Nintendo was more of the outlier and has basically stayed this way since) before it shifted to a different market/type of gamer.
p.s. I know one could list the Sega Saturn (1994-1995) in there to for a legitimate earlier 3D console but that never really seemed to take off as the major players were just PS1/N64 for the early 3D era consoles (although consoles never really got more modern(modern as in more like today's) til I would say the PS2(2000)/XBox(2001) generation). I did have a Sega Saturn at one point though.
