Yeah, it seemed a fair amount of people did that with some systems. I generally considered myself more of a XBox person than Playstation in the long term even though I did use some Sony consoles back-in-the-day a little (I am pretty sure I had a PS1/PS2 at some point in the past. but once I got a XBox and moded it, that was pretty much the end of anything Sony for me as I used the XBox and moved onto the XBox360 eventually and that was pretty much the end of my console owning days as there are simply not enough more recent games to justify the $ of me getting a PS4 or XBox One and what little I do play I can do on the PC which is mostly replaying games from the past).
but during the PS1 vs N64 era I was definitely more into the N64. but looking back on it... one game I played back in those days quite a bit was Mortal Kombat Trilogy and while I played it on N64, it was actually better on PS1. but at the time I just kind of wrote off the PS1. but even to this day I like N64 more than PS1 overall.
during the Genesis vs SNES era... I know my cousin (who I was close to back in the day) was more into Genesis. I don't think I thought much either way even though I could tell the SNES was a bit more powerful hardware etc but I never really sided with Genesis or SNES. but I do remember having a Sega Nomad (it's basically a portable Sega Genesis) at one point but I did not hang onto it for long (like got money back) and I think I swapped it for a SNES if I recall correctly.
Overall I tend to totally agree with you especially given I tend to mostly play shooter variations in general throughout the years of 3D games to date and in that regard I think the PC's mouse+keyboard blows away a controllers analog stick for aiming quickly at something (it takes much less time) as with a mouse I am as good as I can be where as with a analog stick on a typical shooter I am pretty much horrible as my skill level with that is not up to a satisfactory level to where I can enjoy the game. so in other words... on shooter games a analog stick handicaps me as I generally won't play shooters on consoles. in fact, the last shooter I played and really enjoyed on a console was the pre-modern times of GoldenEye on N64 (like 1997-1998 or so) which is pretty much before modern consoles became the standard which was pretty much the PS2(2000)/XBox(2001). but my all time favorite multiplayer shooter is definitely Counter-Strike on the PC as it's pretty safe to say I played that one the most long term as I played it pretty heavily from 2000 through about the mid-2000's or so. it came out in 1999 but I did not start playing in 2000 a bit before the official v1.0 release took place as I think it was Beta 7 (or 7.1) I was on which was just before the official release when I started playing it.
but basically around 1999 or so I started becoming too used to a mouse for aiming at things (with the Quake games etc) and could not go back to a analog stick. so by the time PS2/XBox came along I did not care for those on any shooter based games.

At heart, I'm a PC gamer anyway.
