While I certainly like or love most of the breeds posters have already cited (who can resist a darling little Westie, for example?), I am actually nuts for mutts. I have never owned a purebred dog, but two of our family's dogs were Beagle/Fox Terrier mix, and two others were "schnoodles" (Schnauzer/Poodle mix). All of them came from pounds or animal shelters. By "mutts" I generally mean "randomly bred", but there are a few "designer dogs" that appeal to me--one of my favorites being a Puggle (Pug/Beagle)...though I have a feeling that if I had one of those, it would be giving me orders, on account of their renowned stubbornness.  Here's a nice selection of mutts:  Dogs are like people... It all depends upon the individuals involved and how they react to each other. I've been best friends with many, but there are always some you just don't get along with.
