Having watched The French Connection recently, seemed only natural to follow up with William Friedkin’s next film. Like that film, I haven’t seen this in years and always a welcome revisit. In a stark contrast to the relentless pacing of The French Connection, the pacing here is much more methodical but isn’t any less compelling. Performances are excellent, in particular Jason Miller suffering serious Catholic guilt. For a movie that sometimes borders on the obscene, the scene that made me cringe was the carotid angiography scene; just unnerving. I think this is the only Hollywood movie I’ve seen shot on location in Iraq. For the death of the perpetually drunk Burke Dennings, why was he even in Regan’s room?
