What I liked about it was the understated, real feel about it. What I didn't like was the overall feeling it gave me.
When it came out, I didn't want to see it, having read the book being enough to scare me. My friends tricked me into meeting them at a theater, and they bullied me to go in and watch it with them. I had my eyes shut for most of the bad parts. It was only many, many years later that I actually was able to watch it without hiding my eyes. I had a similar reaction, though I only watched it on tv.
I had read the novel, which is very good, but in no way did that prepare me for what I was about to experience watching the film.
It was such an unsettling feeling I have never encountered with any other film. It really did get to me.
I have no desire to see it again.
