I saw it at a very young age (twice) and it spooked me for years and years to the point that I was afraid to watch it then finally around 2000 I got the nerve to check it out again and then again more recently. I suppose the novelty in it is the possession of a child-there had been other horror films that were doing possession of one kind or another and even evil children but not such a combination. Like every blockbuster of the 70s, the primary driving force is the visual fx design. Fact is that if the makeup on Regan was more traditional it would not be well-received. Things like the words on her stomach or vomiting in someone's face were groundbreaking in cinematic experience for the time.
