Agreed, though I'd put 'lazy' or 'inept' in front of the word filmmakers in your post. There's a long history of strong female characters in film, but these days it's often become a formula at best; and at worst the story and surrounding characters are destroyed in an attempt to prop up the heroine. (See Rey compared to Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi.) Rey is portrayed as a naive schoolgirl in her attempt to redeem Kylo and Luke was right the whole time. Rey is better than everyone at everything and Luke makes ridiculous choices that make no sense and go against everything we know about the character.
