I've always railed against that one. People think the '94 Expos were the '27 Yankees or the Big Red Machine. The WS Trophy already had their name on it. They were a very good team. And I could sit here from now until Christmas naming good teams that didn't win it all. The 2001 Mariners were 85-33 on August 12. The 1978 Red Sox were 57-25 at the AS Break, with a winning percentage of .695. The Expos were playing .649 ball. Only 6 games ahead of the Braves. The Expos started out a paltry 17-15 and got better as the season went along. A team that had Darren Fletcher, Mike Lansing and Sean Berry as starters. All their offense was in the outfield. If Alou, Grissom or Walker got hurt, the Expos would hurt. If Pedro got hurt, this team was done.
Was it the proverbial iceberg that sunk the Expos? I doubt they could have kept Larry Walker and Moises Alou and there was no way they could pay Pedro, whether they won the WS or not.
