You should watch the Saturday Night Live episode that he hosted in the '70s. He may have been up in years, but the musical finale was incredibly energetic. Yes, Desi was like a force of nature. Lucy became the bigger star long term, but Desi set a lot of that up. I'm not saying he was the sole creative force behind the first Lucy show, though he did build up the Desilu production company into a major player in the world of independent TV production. Just about every interview I've ever read with anyone who ever worked with Desi has said pretty much the same thing: the man was a dynamo.
