Xanadu 1980, directed by Robert Greenwold Not a good movie at all, sadly it's a mess that struggles for a style, mixing the old-fashioned musicals with the craze at the time called roller-disco, and Greek Mythology. Not without interest though with a few nice references to old musicals. Gene Kelly plays a character named Danny McGuire, the same name his character had in Cover Girl 1944. It said to be based on the Rita Hayworth movie Down to Earth 1947. Gene Kelly's screen farwell. Michael Beck who was hot after the violent The Warriors 1979 might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but he is incredibly stiff, except on roller skates. One never feels any spark between him and Olivia Newton-John. The movie flopped both commercially and critically, but the soundtrack album became a giant success. The Pan-Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles in it's hay-days, when that building was used in Xanadu it had decayed for many years and only the exteriors were used. The building was detroyed in a fire in 1989 and burned to the ground..
