Getting over a high fever at the moment, so I lay on the couch like a bump on a log and watched TCM this morning. Luckily, I got to catch Johnny Eager (’41), one of those movies I’ve always wanted to see and never quite gotten around to seeing. It’s tons of fun, typically noir-y in all the right ways (tons of hardboiled dialogue: a guy pulls a gun on Robert Taylor’s Johnny but asks him to get out of the car first, because he doesn’t want to “stain the cushions”), with a surprising number of twists and unexpected directions it takes. Van Heflin won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Taylor’s sidekick (who seems to be in love with him, at least platonically), and he’s superb in the role. Really good movie.
