His only motivation was to serve. If that was his only motivation, then he could've just sold war bonds or become a recruiter. But he wanted to join the Army even though he knows he would be a liability on the battlefield and that would put his fellow soldiers at risk since his fellow soldiers would not only have to fight their own battles but also fight Rogers' battles. That's extermley selfish and lacking of any character. That's what we're given in the film. Anything other than that comes from your imagination. What we're given in the film is that he's a skinny weakling with severe health problems who was getting his ass kicked until Bucky stepped in to save him and yet he wants to join the Amry, knowing that he would be a liability on the battlefield and that would put his fellow soldiers at risk since his fellow soldiers would not only have to fight their own battles but also fight Rogers' battles. That's extermley selfish and lacking of any character. I'm not sure how he would be a liability or a burden to the other soldiers. He has severe health problems and was getting his ass kicked until Bucky stepped in to save him. You don't know how that would be a liability on the battlefield? What happens when he's on the battlefield and he's getting his ass kicked by a huge Nazi soldier? His fellow soldiers would have to step in to save him similar to what Bucky did. That would put his fellow soldiers at risk to constantly have to fight for him because he can't fight for himself. It's likely he would take a bullet pretty quickly, taking him out of action early. And that means his fellow soldiers would have to carry him off the battlefield, which would put his fellow soldiers at risk.
