But he had the dog from the start.
In the book the dog shows up and he wants to keep it since the dog is the only normal being he has known for ten years or something. That made it more poignant. I think the dog just dies in the book (since you don't turn into a vampire automatically-you die first).
The most horrific thing in the Will Smith version are the vampire rats.
