While the Canadiens logo still stands and is associated with more success (not now, but in history), I always felt the Expos logo was more iconic, to an extent:
You already got the explanation but from the Question box section of the New York times, from June 3rd 1985:
Then you can find other sources that confirms the basics:
I guess the "L" is only visible because they wanted to emphasize on the "e" and "b" while making a connection with the Canadiens colors. Still one of the best concept of all time, to the point it got ranked #12 on the list of the 30 best baseball logos of all time by ESPN:
And despite the team departure, the caps are still pretty popular:
The caps are made by New Era and sold at many sports shop, here is their site with the selection:

I own two different models.
Until this came up I never noticed the lower case e before. What about the rumor of that being a blue lower case b for baseball though? Somehow it's not in the articles I posted but the "b" is for baseball, at least that's what is accepted by most.
If I'm not mistaken, in an interview given a few days prior to his HOF enshrinement, Tim Raines talked about his career and while covering the Expos part of it, he did talk about the meaning behind the logo. He said the B was for baseball...
It's not an absolute confirmation but that's commonly accepted.
