My mom used to make one annually, about a month or so ahead of Christmas, which she'd store in a tin wrapped in a brandy-soaked cheesecloth. Quite tasty. Properly made they can be yummy, but I don't go for the commercial bricks overladen with candied fruit that all tastes monotonously the same. If I do a store-bought, I tend to prefer panettone as well.
