I can think of two ways to look at it. Will your actions affect the shape of those to come and whether there will be those who remember you. The biggest way to make your mark I can think of is to change the development of a star from a nebula. However, there may be a way to broadcast a signal that's hard to ignore and start a tradition of signaling that lasts until the last life or forever should there be a way to change the fate of the universe or go to another universe.
