It certainly could, but we have quite a lot of good films this year. Honestly, I'm starting to like this unpredictability that we have this year. There are so many good films from both blockbuster AND "art house" fronts. Right there Scorsese is wrong about MCU and cinema as a whole. Yes, people flock to see MCU and blockbuster films, but also art house films too, if you pay attention to those per theater avg. at the box office. And I'm so glad the Oscars are starting to pay attention to blockbusters more often. In the past few years, we've seen Mad Max: Fury Road, Get Out, and Black Panther get Best Picture recognition. Perhaps Joker can be this year's blockbuster? Yup. Think of Parasite. Joker might be too controversial for Best Picture, but maybe that World War I film called 1917? Also, I would place Dunkirk in place of Get Out since the latter is actually a low-budget film. Also, in 2015, The Martian also got the Best Picture nomination.
