He peaked too early. He started out together with Sean Penn. They were both in "The Falcon And The Snowman" and I thought Hutton gave the stronger performance of the two. But then he won an Oscar relatively early and after that his career started going downhill.

Penn on the other hand slowly built a strong body of work. He had to struggle a bit and did a lot of supporting roles, but he kept working with great directors.
