An old Bette Davis classic the petrified forest (1936) would be the immediate answer. She's a waitress at a roadside diner in the American south western desert.
restaurant..
the cook, the thief, his wife & her lover (1989-uk) is an amazing film set in a fancy restaurant. Not for the faint hearted...that's what they say to make people see it.
Also Stanley Tucci restaurant movie big night (1996) is a good one.
some other titles.. 'though can't recall how much time some films spend in the restaurant / diner setting..
