13 Reasons Why - I had to watch the whole thing before determining it belongs here.
At first, I thought the show was written too precise to be taken as true outline for what a typical person goes through to get to the point of suicide. Even by the end, the use of the tapes seems like a disconnect for the despair she faces. Most of the season reveals that Hannah is fairly popular, has a great best friend, & has great parents. This was all hindering me. Although I don;t think that a person who stupidly makes the decision to kill themselves is stereotypical, if a show is set to address suicide when few shows do, it would be a good idea to find a bigger representation of who typically does commit suicide. Hannah is not that person.
By the halfway mark, I decided to stop thinking of it as a show about suicide since it was actually more about the mystery surrounding why Hannah would do it and the coverup. Even then, it was almost average if not for the acting skills of the "teens".
But then episode 9 and above happened and it was all so well done and tragic, it's hard to forget any of it.
I was thinking about watching it with the kids, but I still don't think of it as a show that helps potential suicide victims. Maybe the bullies can learn something or the overall apathy kids tend to have surrounding various peer pressures, but even then the actions of the "guilty" people are too precise and conspiratorial. The better show to highlight what pushes a kid over the edge is American Crime's second season. Plus this show is a hard R- Something I think was a mistake.
The ending leads to the possibility of a season 2 and while I'm glad season 1 exists, I won't bother with a season 2.
