Flowers for Algernon - Read this book finally. It was very good. Basically the story is about a mentally retarded guy who is able to become [too] smart thanks to an experimental operation. The writer did this thing where the story is a journal (I normally dislike this type of narrative) so you can see the progression of the protagonist from mentally disabled to genius and how this mirrors the mouse, Algernon, who went through the same experiment.
It's very good and very sad through much of it. I won;t say much but it does a great job of getting Charlie to realize what people really thought of him all those years he was too disabled to understand stuff.
