The millar70 response is actually one of the best: it is not the province of "science" to answer questions that begin with the word
"why" (such as "Why is the grass green?" or "Why is the sky blue?")...and a tongue-in-cheek response to many such queries is "Because God made it that way!"
That was well-learned from a favorite advanced chemistry professor (and an atheist) a long time ago. Science is best suited to
responding to questions that begin with the word "How": E.g., "How does it come about that the color we perceive the grass to
be is the one we designate as 'green'?"
