One of my favorite films. Since it's "family holiday entertainment," it tends to get ignored when discussions of the "greatest Hollywood films of all time" come up, but it has everything that many great dramas have--fine performances from even the most incidental characters; memorable dialogue; a perfect balance of comedy and unforced melodrama; and a serious message that is delivered without mawkish preachiness. I know I'll be in the minority here, but I enjoy watching the "colorized" version; it gives the movie the same nostalgic feel as old tinted photos of the 1940s-'50s.
Avoid the 1994 remake. It was so painfully tacky and witless that I had to turn it off after a half-hour or so.
