How on earth did Starship Troopers get greenlit?

one of the few examples were a bad movie, terrible source material and horrible screenplay turned out to be hilariously entertaining and quite layered if you get the anti-fascist satire. A cult classic, not as good as Robocop of course but still. They do not make them like that anymore. The sequels were just insipid and bad alas.
