Believe it or not, that damned thing is better looking in pictures than in real life. We went to see it (Jamestown is just down the road a bit). People swore the birds never came near it. "Scarecrow Lucy" it was called. The sculptor quit because of the abuse, even thought he said it wasn't. Yeah, it was better than I could have done. But seriously, he couldn't look at it and say "Well, that didn't turn out very good, did it?' My impression of Lucille Ball is that she'd have had a sense of humour about it all. But, few would have recognised her as the person in the statue, which seems like a major tourist industry problem to me. The general consensus ws that it looked like Conway Twitty. Ball was quite beautiful. Her early career was based on her looks. But a good statue wouln't have got the attention that this nightmare did. It probably did more for tourism.
