I was half expecting them to kill Lando just because!

But it was shades of Obi-wan.

He wasn't killed by Vader.
That robe was empty when Vader struck it.
He basically became one with the Force & dissolved

That's ONE way of looking at it. My opinion is that he gave himself up to preserve the secret of Luke's existence, AND he died fighting. Its a decent death.
