I second the suggestion of Jared Diamond's writings. His book "Guns, Germs and Steel" puts forth very interesting hypotheses to explain European dominance. One of them involves the orientation of continents with the Earth's poles: A land that has an east-west orientation has a big advantage over one with a north-south orientation, because particular plants and animals usually have a limited range of latitudes that they do well in.
