I meant no derogatory suggestion in my comment. If anything I feel it’s cool to see another adaptation get similar awards. Here are the three adaptations and their Oscar nominations: The 1933 RKO version was nominated for best picture, best director, and won best adapted screenplay. The 1994 version was nominated for best actress, best costume design, and score. The new 2019 version has nominations for picture, actress, adapted screenplay, costume design, and score.
Thank you for that clarification. I love the 1994 version, but there's a vibrancy and immediacy to the Gerwig adaptation, with all the sisters fully developed as characters unto themselves, that makes it quite invigorating to watch.
Here's an interview with Saoirse Ronan about making the film, which you might enjoy. It's a wonderful illustration of the process of filmmaking under the best of circumstances and shows the joy that goes into it when there's a skillful director at the helm.
Oh, and when she mentions they "checked the gate" that reminded me that Gerwig shot this on film! That's why it looks so beautful.
