I was knocked out realising history was being made. I always like the nomination stage best, it interests me greatly.
Martin Scorsese now becomes the 2nd most Oscar-nominated director in history, pulling ahead of Billy Wilder. Only one filmmaker stands ahead of him and I know how much this will mean to Mr. Scorsese. You can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps.
Most Oscar-Nominated Directors
12 - William Wyler
9 - Martin Scorsese
8 - Billy Wilder
7 - Woody Allen 7 - David Lean 7 - Steven Spielberg 7 - Fred Zinnemann
6 - Clarence Brown* 6 - Frank Capra
"It's not a musical; it's a film with music. I got that definition from Billy Wilder, who said you can't call it a musical unless the people sing in situations where you don't expect them to."
- Martin Scorsese discusses his upcoming film 'New York, New York' with Roger Ebert in 1976
Al Pacino joins Spencer Tracy and Paul Newman with 9 acting nominations; Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine said Tracy as an actor was second to none. In the all-time list, only Laurence Olivier and Jack Nicholson stand before them. This will mean a lot to Mr. Pacino's fans the world over. As Mike Nichols once said regarding the artistic space Pacino inhabits, "Al is consulting somewhere else."
