That's the elephant in the room. If we all never watched another movie again starting today, we'd all be fine. I know it takes the fun out of film snobbery but a movie is a movie is a movie.

In a way, yes, we'd be fine. But that's the thing about escapism. It's a way to unwind. To get away for a while. Like a mini vacation from yourself. I think that's why the most popular characters are the ones that's like them and change into a superhero (Superman/Spider-man) or the powerful outsider (X-men). It's all wish fulfillment. A lot of movies are this. Especially action movies. Even movies like The Irishman is fantasy wish fulfillment. I think that's why Scorsese keeps making gangster movies or even movies with the same leads. Probably sees himself in that actor (De Niro/DiCaprio).
