They certainly can. I'm sure this is happening to piggy back on the moderate success of Crawl. I liked Crawl, but I wasn't aware it had any substantial success. This smells to me more of studios exploiting whatever recognizable IP they have laying around. If it leads to a trend of fun monster/creature features, then I'm on board. I don't think it was substantial. I think it did ok, but did much better critically than anyone expected. Oh, it definitely is about exploiting a previously owned IP, but I think this IP specifically has a precedent for recent success now. I don't think it's a coincidence that this remake that nobody was asking for is going ahead at this time.
