I don't say this about many movies but I thought Tootsie was awful. I don't regret watching it but I can live without revisiting it for the rest of my life. Even when Dustin Hoffman revealed himself as a man, I thought it was rushed and anticlimactic. The gimmick wore off quick and no performances took it to the next level.
Maybe awful is a stretch but nothing (for me) rose above the level of "it's fine". It's fine and not a compliment more.
Each to his own Mr. Cat, but I find Tootsie absolutely terrific in ALL departments. In my top 5 comedies of all time.
The performances I find ARE top-notch and in high gear without being heavy-handed. Garr was funny, real and in the moment, Lange won an Oscar for her layered character who learns to empower herself over scuzzball men, Durning had never been better, Murray was cute, Pollack was hilarious and Hoffman just hit the ball right out of the park when he transformed into Dorothy and then had to balance Michael with Dorothy. What a great character she was and she really knew how to pull all the right strings on both male and female characters. Hoffman made her real and believable and no wonder Julie missed her. I miss the film as soon as it ends because I want more.
This film had a rare timing that doesn't appear funny on the surface, but just naturally flowed out of the situations. Nothing about it was forced and it was fresh and original, even if cross-dressing males wasn't anything new in the movies. Nice. I don't completely recall it that way but I like hearing about it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's been a very long time since I've thought about Tootsie but you've given me food for thought.
