I don't think Thomas Aquinas and Saint Augustine were stupid people. Many intelligent people believe this stuff. I'm just giving you my opinion. You can believe anything you want. I'm an atheist. I don't believe in Catholicism. I'm just saying there are intelligent people who do. And they're very literal about it.
