Stephen King criticized Kubrick's decision in the book "On Writing". One point was that Nicholson was already known for playing deranged characters. King went on to say as well, that Nicholson should have been cast as Barry Lyndon and Ryan O'Neal as Jack Torrance. I think that may have worked better. Still, the film does not seem to suffer for Nicholson's performance.
