1990 Dances with Wolves 7/10
1991 The Silence of the Lambs 6/10
1992 Unforgiven 8/10
1993 Schindler's List 8/10
1994 Forrest Gump 6/10
1995 Braveheart 7/10
1996 The English Patient (not seen)
1997 Titanic 7/10
1998 Shakespeare in Love (not seen)
1999 American Beauty 4/10 (what a huge mistake, out of the nominated films, The Insider and/or The Green Mile were vastly superior)
Outside of 1998 (which I can't completely judge since I haven't seen SIL) and 1999 the Academy did a good job. I used to like Forrest Gump but after repeat viewings I think it's been parodied too much to view without treating it as a joke.
I need to see Shakespeare in Love, but I have to admit that it had very strong competition, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line... Geez...
