Oh dear lord I guess they wanted to prove how diverse they were to all the film snobs at that time, due to complaints from others similar to yourself, because of how seriously they took French cinema.  But let’s be real, I would say it would have been a funding thing as well. By the way, if I do seek out a foreign film to watch, a French one would not be at the top not my list. It is all era contextual and political agendas do rule. Evidence of this is in the topical choices they make at the time. Why would a French film not be the top of your list? Why would you not base a film to watch on how good it looks not where it is made? I'm so fascinated by this mindset. It' so alien to me. It's bonkers.
