No, Goodfellas was not robbed! Why would the Academy honor a film about despicable, spiritually impoverished people, over an epic, passionate and heartfelt masterful work about a majestic people and the land in which they inhibit, that eventually got its culture raped and decimated.
I will say though, what Goodfellas did having going for it, despite its ugliness, was a terrific script, which probably could have been awarded to Scorsese and his co-writer. Dances With Wolves was a screenplay first, then turned into a novel, then back into a screenplay. One could ask, which category did it really belong too?
Because Goodfellas was the better movie. Better directed and acted.. And who cares about people in Goodfellas are spiritually impoverished? When has that matter at all when determining which movie should win Best picture. Plus the Dances with Wolves victory was probably due to woke points even though it's the typical white savior narrative. Personally, I prefer the remake: Dances with the Samurai. I don’t relate to Goodfellas, the same way I do Dances. Dances was perfect cinema, where pretty much all elements came together to make a superb cinematic experience. I am not undermining the quality of Goodfellas, but it is not the kind of film the Academy would go for in lieu of the competition. I am not a huge Scorsese fan either. I find him an arrogant film-maker. I dislike The Departed - only won because of poor quality representation that year - And while I enjoyed watching Wolf Of Wall St, I question its existence and reason to be made.
