The easiest way to make a tough villain into a troubled hero is to have them being influenced by someone else. They like to stick close to the comics and bringing in Mystique is the easiest way to do that. Only thing is that they have to not Loki/Magneto... /Mystique her. Make her a semi one-off villain. Don't keep bringing her back every movie as a main character for every X-men movie. "Surprise" returning villains are a good thing. I wouldn't even mind if they used her and never showed her Blue form. Have her as a character. Cast with a good, middle aged, character actress that stays in human form. I rather she had more than one human form (ones she made up and not just copies) and a "main" actress for Mystique. Like don't have her keep changing to regular Jennifer Lawrence because that's who's under the blue make-up. Also, have her wearing clothes. Her "clothes" is just her skin like when she turns into other people (man that made no sense for them to do that).
