I get what you are saying, but that would be a matter of career recognition more than nominating the performance based on the merit of the performance. The same argument could be made for Sean Connery that same year, but his performance is far more memorable imo. I legimately thought O'Toole was sublime, not my win by any means but would nominate him at least as well. It is not a very difficult role for him imo. He plays it as good as he possibly could, but it is very similar to performances he had given before that. Connery on the other hand gives one the best performances of his career in The Untouchables. It is the most charismatic performance he had given at that point in his career and he brings a fatherly wisdom to the part that he also had never shown before in quite the same way.
