Bottom line...
-It's within my Top 77 movies. -It's my #1 movie of 2017. -It's my 2nd favorite movie from this director behind Felon (2008) (9/10 ; within my Top 16 movies). -It's within my Top 3 movies (i.e. Shot Caller (2017)/Hostiles (2017-2018)/Ford v Ferrari (2019)) in the 2016-2019 time frame.
if you like Shot Caller I definitely recommend Felon (2008) as it's from the same director and is of similar subject matter. but all other movies from the director are nothing special as it's just these two that stand out.
but no one talks about a quality movie like this but overpraises average-ish movies nominated for Best Picture in the Oscars and super hero stuff that's nothing special etc. Shot Caller does what it does quite well as it takes a decent person and he slowly becomes a monster as initially he's doing it to survive but little-by-little gets worse and worse etc.
p.s. I have seen Shot Caller twice so far (July 2017/Feb 2018). I have seen Felon at least 4-5 times.
