Now that I think about it you might be right.

Cruise always gets flack for lack of range, but he is great when it comes to displaying emotion.

I think the general population things of the two of them simply as movie stars. Attractive and charming, but not actors with much range.

Brad Pitt has a lot of range and I don't even know how that can be disputed.

He even has range within his crazy performances. Twelve Monkeys and Kalifornia and Fight Club are 3 performances that are nothing alike imo.
