I'd be interested to hear from somebody who saw it without watching anything else.
Can you name maybe the biggest 3 things that happen that you think would be confusing if you had never seen any other MCU film?
Ok here are my thoughts
1. The Bucky-Steve relationship. Thats a real big one. Without the history build up in First Avenger and Winter Soldier Steve chosing Bucky's side would make no sense because why would he turn his back on the Avengers?
2. There are a lot of references to the internal relationships of the Avengers with the main one being of course the Steve vs Tony relationship. They really dont like each other. Why can only be truly understood if you daw earlier movies. They build this up already from phase one in the individual movies. There is a history
3. Where is Zemo coming from? Age of Ultron is a major set up and key movie for all that is going on in Civil War. You will be aware something happened in Sokovia what affected Zemo. You may catch the fact its on Tony's head and that is why Tony is so strongly for the accords and why Zemo hates the Avengers so much but its never really made clear. Not in so many words.
Actually I could experiment. My sister joined us to GotG Vol.2 but she never saw any other MCU movie beside the original GotG. I could ask her to watch Civil War without any other movie and see what she says. Interesting...
Bucky-Steve is big, especially in guiding the events of Civil War. Although I do have TWS on my list and I think they do a good enough job there of defining who Bucky is to Steve without having seen TFA. But maybe not. You could be onto something there.
As far as Zemo's motivation, I do have AOU on my list of must watch films, so that's all included too.
YES. Have your sister watch Civil War. I'd love to hear her thoughts on what's happening. How many questions she asks you during the film, etc. In fact, don't answer anything for her until she's seen the entire thing. Find out if she's confused at the end. I love this idea.
