"The Battle of the Bulge" (1965) The battle happened during an extremely cold winter, and most of the movie looks it, but the climactic confrontation between the German and American tanks (which never happened in real life BTW) was obviously not filmed in the snow. If the movie were made today a little CGI could easily fix that problem. That's another little thing I watch for in movies. Fake winter. You can tell if it's really in winter because you can see the actor's breath. I realize that older Hollywood productions didn't film outside in the snow (Battleground being a good example). But many modern movies/TV shows use fake winter. Early Bame of Thrones.
Might be nitpicking, but, when you live ina place with a lot of winter, you notice these things more
Though filmed mostly on a sound stage, I really got the feel of winter in Battleground. The breathe steam is missing, but an excess of it would be distracting to watch.
