I thought she was just a hobby surfer, who dropped out of medical school because her mom died or some such exposition bullshit that we learn by her phone appearing on the screen. Got I hate that shit. That movie sucks. I'm not one for rigorously analysing films while I'm watching them, which is just as well or I'd never finish any. When you put it like that, The Shallows sucked donkey balls, but I watched it with my brain firmly disengaged and really enjoyed it. Despite the fact I was rooting for the shark, as I always do, due to my perhaps slightly unreasonable, but heartfelt, dislike of surfers.
