I saw the OT like a year prior to TPM coming out so dunno if I should count, but I did not realise that Sidious was the Emperor I don't think, I think in the OT didn't they just refer to him as the Emperor?
In the movies he was only called the Emperor, but he was called Palpatine in the novelizations and plenty of other materials. Yeah never read that stuff, I'm a movies and tv guy, video games sometimes also but even then as I said I only just got into SW the year prior to TPM coming out and no one I knew were big into SW until the PT began and even then things like The Matrix and horror movies were the bigger pop culture items at the time for us.
