It is sad when they die but there is so much more that's exciting and happy. Like when a 4 week old meerkat pup decides to go hunting with the adults and they have to carry him home because he fell asleep. Or the babysitter sneaks off with a roving male and gets scolded by mom. Or you see a pup crawl from the burrow for the first time and over a couple seasons see it grow and become a productive adult of the gang. Or a year old male, basically a meerkat teenager, sneaks out and mates with the arch rival groups dominant female. They are fascinating creatures and become so acclimated to people that they treat them as part of the environment.
